Being in the ministry for thirty plus years, Pastor Leo and I strongly believe that there is a Biblical basis for fundraising that goes back to Moses and the Israelites. In Exodus 25 God tells Moses to ask for an offering: 1The LORD said to Moses, 2“Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give. Exodus 25:1-2 NIV
We give donors the opportunity to donate to our ministry, just as Moses told the Israelites to bring an offering. We receive donations from anyone whose heart is prompted; we don't expect them to give to continue to be blessed by the ministry. God tells Moses to have the Israelites build a tabernacle: 3 These are the offerings you are to receive from them: gold, silver and bronze; 4blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen; goat hair; 5 ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather; acacia wood; 6 olive oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; 7 and onyx stones and other gems …Exodus 25:3-7 NIV
The offering consists of the things the Israelites had in their possession. The offering goes toward the construction of the tabernacle. We don't ask for construction materials, but we do ask for money. We also read that there is a plan and a purpose for the offering: 8 “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. 9Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.
Exodus 25:8-9 NIV There is an end purpose that God has already planned. Similarly, we have ministry goals that we plan. We strategize and forecast ways we can minister to people according to
the mission God has called us to. Notice that even though God had plans for the tabernacle, He didn't simply form it from
dust. He asked Moses to ask the Israelites to bring an offering, and the tabernacle was made from their offerings. This is the wonderful process that God invites us into: we see the offerings that we bring being used for His plans! And like Moses, He gives fundraisers the role of inviting others to bring their offering and see what God can do with it!
