Factory Manager leading raw sugar, refined sugar, and 40 MW biomass-fired cogeneration operations for a vertically integrated mill. Oversees plant reliability, steam supply, and power export to the grid while applying Professional Mechanical Engineer credentials to mechanical systems and boiler operations. • Simon also received two (2) Best Technical Paper Awards at PHILSUTECH, the first one was in 2003 when he presented the paper entitled “Retrofitting of Wet Gas Scrubber Plant for CADP Boiler No. 2” during the PHILSUTECH’s (50th) Golden Anniversary Annual National Convention in Bacolod City. The second one was in 2022 with a paper entitled “Modern Bagasse Dryer, A Promising Solution for the Fuel Problem of the Philippine Sugar Industry” was presented at 68th PHILSUTECH Annual National Convention in Cebu.
• Simon has international exposure on the Cane Sugar Industries and Biomass-Fired Bagasse Boilers of Australia, India, Thailand, United States, Brazil, China, South Africa, Swaziland, and the Fiji Islands.
• A. Exposure to new processes and technologies
• India (2017) – observed in technical capacity the new innovative technologies adapted in Dhampur Sugar Mills, Ltd. such as Bagasse Dryer operation, planting techniques, utilization & processing of solid and liquid waste, sugarcane Research and Development, and operation of its Bagasse-fired Boilers and Co-Generation Plant.
• China (2008) – visited Mi Peng Sugar Mill Group to assess the quality and performance of various Bagasse-fired Boilers that are fabricated in China, a cheaper alternative to US and European made equipment.
• Singapore (2003), Taiwan (2006) and China (2007) – served as consultant for Mr. Alfredo Yao of Zest-O Corporation in their study to buy an idle raw and refinery sugar plant and Package Boiler including ethanol plants as their Zest-O juice drink requires big volume of sugar.
• Brazil (2007) – observed various modern Bagasse-fired Boilers, sugar mills, raw and refinery plants including ethanol plants as reference for CADPI Strategic Expansion Program.
• Thailand (2003) – observed various installations of Bagasse-Fired boiler, Kawasaki Turbo-Generating set, Bagasse Dryer and COGEN Plant. Meet also some suppliers who are repairing turbine rotor (i.e. Kawasaki Turbines).
• Thailand (2001) – observed various equipment used by Thai Sugar Mills in reducing Bagasse-Fired Boiler particulate emission level especially the Wet Gas Scrubber System. Assessed various bagasse dryer installation being used by Thai Sugar Mills that has the capability to export power to the grid.
• South Africa and Swaziland (2001) - observed wet gas scrubber installed in various Bagasse-fired Boilers as particulate emission reduction equipment to help CADPI select the most appropriate Wet Gas Scrubber for its boilers.
• B. Training and boiler commissioning
• USA (2007) – evaluated the complete raw sugar plant facility at Bryant Mills for a possible procurement of CADP for its Strategic Expansion Program. Dismantled and recovered all usable equipment from Bryant Sugar Mill for the strategic expansion program of CADP, especially on Bagasse-fired Boiler, power plant and process equipment. Visited Clewiston Sugar Mill in Florida to learn best practices in sugar manufacturing.
• USA (2007) – evaluated the raw sugar plant facility at St. James Sugar Mill for possible procurement of CADP for its Strategic Expansion Program.
• Fiji Islands (1996) - visited Lautoka and Labasa sugar mills as Commissioning Engineer (with John Thompson Australia (JTA) Engineers) of the 200-Ton JTA Bagasse-fired Boiler.
• Australia (1996) – visited the biggest Bagasse-fired Boiler (320 Tons/Hour) in the world located at Invicta Mill in Ingham to see the new technologies in boiler combustion, fuel/ash handling, ID fans and gas emission controls.
• C. Occular inspection of sugar equipment suppliers and fabrication facilities
• China (2015) – evaluated various Chinese made boiler tubes for potential use in CADPI.
• India (2009) – visited the on-going fabrication of Roxas Alcohol, Inc. (Roxol) equipment for Process, Steam Generation and Power Generation to assess the quality and timeliness of various fabrication jobs. Visited Pearl Distillery to observe the commissioning of Cogent Biomass Boiler (40 Ton).
• India (2008) – visited Fabrication Shop of KBK and COGEN to assess its capability to fabricate equipment for Roxol Ethanol Plant. Visited the Pearl Ethanol Plant to see Cogent Biomass Boiler that burns vinasse mixed with bagasse
• D. Involvement with international engineering professional organization
• Indonesia (2019) – represented the Philippines through PSME and PTC in the 37th Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organization (CAFEO). Member of Boiler Steering Committee, ASEAN Boiler Inspectorate.
