Skills

  • Project management
  • Strategic planning
  • Engineering design
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Manufacturing knowledge
  • Training and mentoring

Accomplishments

  • Product engineering for switchmode power supplies ranging from 10W to 1000W
  • Proponent of statistical engineering (Shainin methods) for problem solving of product engineering issues
  • Design engineering for switchmode chargers and adapters (power range from 2 to 25W) using the latest controller chips that achieves the best efficiency and EMI performance
  • Used simulation tools such as LTSPICE, MATLAB and Minitab in tolerance analysis
  • Product cost management thru proper choice of design approach and critical components
  • Lean Six-sigma practitioner using tools of technology catering for manufacturing environment
  • People management and development – Hiring and retention, technical coaching and leadership development, resource planning for increased capacity
  • Involvement in a technical institute as a industry lecturer for basic electronics and Power Electronics subjects
  • It has given me a chance to see things in retrospect which can enhance my professional career in the field of electronics
  • Have come to take interest in the study of MATLAB applications, Average and small signal modeling and analysis of power converters, feedback loop compensation and voltage and peak/average current control methods
  • Interests in Power Electronics
  • Thesis advisor to various power electronics projects such as the DC house where it uses bidirectional converter to step down renewable energy sources and step up during back up mode operation, loosely coupled wireless low power charger thru magnetic resonance which was awarded a financial grant from USAID, and a cell balancing circuit with bidirectional flyback converter for electric vehicles
  • Also enhanced the power electronics track in a technical institute by developing the outcome based course that solidify student learning
  • Technical recruiting and staffing
  • Doing job interviews as hiring manager for certain companies I worked for is a normal job description when you are head of a certain department
  • However, the role of doing interviews and searches of people for various companies has been a very fulfilling endeavor
  • TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Patent on Switching-bursting method and apparatus for reducing standby power and Improving load regulation in DC-DC converter; United States Patent 7106602; Issued Sept 12, 2006
  • This patent was used in one of the designs for mobile charger since the required stand-by power is being restricted by the European community
  • As a side effect, efficiency and load regulation have been improved in the design made customer improve their spec to suit the current performance
  • USB Implementer’s Forum (USB Battery Charging Working Group Member – 2009 to 2011)
  • A contributor to the USB Battery Charging Specification rev1.2 released last Dec 7, 2010
  • A universal specification that standardized USB chargers worldwide
  • Have proposed a different approach in specifying a USB charger
  • The norm was to put the rated current in the middle of the tolerance, but this practice can no longer support the inherent function on a charger which has a constant current right after the full load rating.

Additional Information

  • AWARDS , Charge and Advertise Research Project - Cooperative Agreement No. AID-492-A-13-00011 Sep 2016 USAID-STRIDE (United States Agency for International Development - Science, Technology, Research, and Innovation for Development) thru the RTI (Research Triangle Institute, North Carolina USA) Part of the TIP team awarded with the Research Project Grant to implement specific activities that contributed to the achievement of the project objectives of design and development. The project is a loosely coupled wireless charging device for smart phones with the capability for information dissemination and advertising. Design of a Non-isolated Bidirectional DC-DC Converter Using Multiphase Synchronous Buck and Boost Topologies Sep 2016 Technological Institute of the Phils; Best Thesis Awardee adviser under the ECE program in TIP for SY2016. The project is a non-isolated bidirectional DC to DC converter that will be used in the DC House Project of Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP). The bidirectional dc-dc converter is composed of buck converter that is capable of performing a non-isolated bidirectional dc-dc conversion in boost topology that is suitable to harness renewable energy from multiple types of sources simultaneously.
  • up of Product Engineering group of Astec in EPZA Rosario, Cavite. Recruited and hired new electronics engineering graduates from various colleges to fill up the Product Engineering group. Have supervised the group to adhere to Statistical Engineering methods (Shainin) in their problem-solving efforts. Systematized selection of Power Supply Adapters thru technical discussions, factory site process audits, and the collection of design documentation of PSU OEM vendors. Set-up the charger design group of Astec in Pasig City to break into the growing mobile phone business. Doubled the number of design engineers under my group to support the growing demand of mobile phone business using graduate students from our Power Electronics diploma course from our Partner University. Set-up the charger and adapter design facility for PSRD (Flextronics) in Pasig City to increase design capacity for power supply by catering to its major EMS customers. The experience has been heavily exposed to adapters for cable routers requiring long life and high efficiency with a range of 12W to 25W.
