- M/V Hub Orca is an ocean tug of Imabari Shipbuilding w/ 496gt. A low speed vsl w/ repeller azimuth propulsion a tow barge of 3,000gt. 185m in length. My duty is Chiefmate a shift from 0400-0800 &1600-2000 during navigation and in port. Supervise loading ships blocked on the barge, preparation of tow arrangement especially the 80mm diameter 50m shockline and the connection to fish plate or Delta plate and the 30 mtrs bridle. Check welding of steel shoring on ships block and the chain lashing. During undocking maneuver from port the Chiefmate is on the barge with the thirdmate, oiler, engr, ab's to pick up the 16 tons anchor when the tug and the barge start to move, make sure the shock line will not be fouled or entangle on the side of the barge. Master and the chief officer established good communication regarding chain direction and how many shackles must be in constant reporting. Call master when the anchor is aweigh so he can maneuver the tug and the barge clear from the dock or other obstruction. When the anchor is secured tell the engineers to stop the barge generator and prepare to transfer all crew from barge to the tug. When all crew is on the tug report to master so he will open up and to clear the tug from the barge. Report to master the condition of the shockline and if it is not entangled on the barge side so the tug can start pulling out from side tow and prepare for sea voyage.
