Dairy Farm Assistant
1 Year- Worked in different areas of the dairy farm, including feeding, herding, milking, and calf rearing. Learned the forage and concentrate ration used on the farm while maintaining barn cleanliness, providing adequate ventilation, clean water, mineral blocks, salts, and fresh rice hull bedding. Called the herd from barns to the milking area and back, ensuring proper gates and pathways were accessible for the cattle. We were also trained to install and repair electric fences, for instance, using a tensioner to fix loose fences and making sure insulators are placed properly.
- Milked 102 cows in a parallel herringbone milking parlour, ensuring proper placement of milking clusters while excluding infected or inverted teats. Prioritized sanitization of milking parlour and equipment before and after milking using liquid chlorine and caustic-based cleaners to prevent contamination. Every Saturday (general cleaning) it is important to also wipe and brush milking equipment with sanitizers/cleaning solutions to remove dirt and foreign debris that may have solidified inside and outside the milk clusters and linings. Maintained the health of calves by cleaning their feeding buckets twice daily, bottle feeding younger calves, and providing milk bucket feeding for older calves. Disbudding was also taught in the calf rearing area to avoid the horns from growing as they become mature, ear tagging was done to give calves identity and to know what family they came from. Additional skill earned also include tractor driving.
