- Responsible in receiving post operative patients knowing the following:
operation performed, untoward problem that occurred in the surgical
suite, present condition and complication that might arise and the signs and symptoms to watch.
- Maintain a patent airway. Asses respiratory status upon receiving and at intervals until discharge.
- Administered oxygen as ordered and carry out “STAT” orders immediately. Patient who has received a general or spinal/epidural anesthesia must received supplemental oxygen during the recovery phase.
-Determine level of consciousness to assess the need to reverse medications.
- Monitor blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate and respiratory rate
every 10 minutes initially until stable and hourly depending on the order.
- Position patient in recovery position (lateral position). Unless
contraindicated, the unconscious patient is positioned on his side, a pillow on his back and with his chin extended upward to minimize any danger of aspiration.
- Assess for objective signs of pain, protective guarding behavior, moaning, crying, restlessness, irritability and facial expression of pain.
- To adhere the implementation of infection control practices as well as
environmental safety and waste management.
- Observe the principles of safe administration of blood transfusion.
- Prepare and anticipates during emergency Code Blue in PACU.
- Check the “Post Anesthesia Care Unit Criteria”. Indicator of recovery
includes stable blood pressure, adequate respiratory function, adequate oxygen saturation level compared with baseline, and spontaneous movement on command.
- As soon as patient is fully awake, inform him that surgery is finished and reorient him as to time and place.
- Proper endorsement-the RR/PACU nurse reports the baseline data about the patients general condition, review post-operative orders or therapeutic regimen including medications, diet and activity performs, dressing changes and wound care and any other treatments to the receiving nurse. Patients being discharge directly to home such as Day Case requires verbal and written instructions about follow-up care.
- Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiates appropriate
preventive and corrective action.
- Comply with the standards laid down by the International and National Accreditation.
