  • Supervise, develop, and manage other site safety & health officers (SSHO) under their area of responsibility to ensure the effective administration of the project/company incident prevention efforts.

  • Initiate, perform and document jobsite inspections and audits with special emphasis on hazard recognition, unsafe behaviors, and correction of potential third party, asset loss and employee injuries.   • Coordinate and control the development and review of job safety analysis for each major phase of our work to ensure its safe completion. This includes assessing the need for and facilitating the training for each JSA as may be required.
  • Create a weekly safety summary which accounts for Division Safety Department activity and captures Division safety performance data and results. Participate in a weekly Safety Department Conference Call, communicating summary information and strategizing with safety colleagues.
  • Conduct annual internal safety audits of Great Lakes work sites, ensuring compliance with company Safety Management System (SMS) and regulatory requirements and communicating results back to the ISM Program Manager.

  • Implement the project site S.H.E. requirements put forth in Company’s Safety Management Program.
  • Guide and support the Site Management Team and Dredge and Reclamation Crews in all aspects the company’s Incident & Injury Free Safety initiative.
  • 100% familiar with the requirements of the contract specifications and ensure compliance with all safety, health, and environmental issues.
  • Make daily visits to the dredge, attendant plant and shore-based operations to observe and guide personnel in safe work practices and methods. Walk around inspections should be made with the Site Manager and or Captain / Supervisor whenever possible. Assist Supervisors with the ordering of safety supplies and equipment which result from your inspection of the worksite.
  • Participate in project progress meetings and stay abreast of task scheduling to ensure that potential workplace hazards are discussed, and safe work practices planned.
  • Assist and guide the Site Manager and Dredge supervisors in preparation and execution of the Weekly Toolbox Safety Meetings. Submit toolbox meeting reports to the Risk Management Department in Oak Brook.
  • Prepare a weekly safety report summarizing your daily activities, training and near miss and incident summary. This is to be submitted to the Site Manager along with an input from End of Shift Tracking Logs. This information will be used by the Contract Manager to prepare the Weekly Project Report.
  • Assist Site Management in conducting new hire safety orientations, familiarization walk-a-rounds and implementation of the ‘Green Hat’ training program.
  • If an incident occurs, coordinate the required medical care, and accompany the individual to the designated project medical facility. Ensure all required reports relating the incident are properly completed by the appropriate field supervisor and assist them as necessary.
  • Guide Site Management in preparation of the Incident investigation and Tap Root analysis as required.
  • Review safety deficiencies/observations with the Site Manager, Dredge Captain, Chief Engineer, or their appropriate supervisor, prior to recording them in the SAFENET reporting system.
  • Conduct up to a one-hour safety stand down whenever an OSHA Recordable Lost time injury occurs and take appropriate remedial measures to prevent recurrence of the accident.
  • Accompany the customer’s representative on any scheduled site safety visits to plant and various site areas.
  • Participate in pre-shift meetings and guide the crews in preparation of JSA’s. Make recommendations for improvements to procedures in the Company’s Safety Management System.
  • Maintain a Job Safety Log (binder) for each project you are assigned to. The Log should contain copies of the following reports:

a) Land based and vessel inspection reports.

b) Emergency notification phone list

c) Emergency procedures

d) Daily safety activity reports

e) Copies of Weekly Toolbox Training attendance sheets

f) Copies of Safety Orientation forms including Familiarization Checklists

g) Copies of Confined Space Entry and Hot Work Permits

h) Master safety deficiency list

i) Any other safety, health or environmental reports and correspondence.

j) Liaise with the Division Safety, Health & Environmental Manager, as necessary, to address project safety, health, and environmental compliance issues.
